Slugs and snails and puppy dog tails

Slugs... Some of the slugs here in Hamburg, Northern Germany are are brick red and have eye spots at the back. I was sitting in the window sill reading when I looked over to the adjacent wall and saw the squishy alien to the left. I'd never seen a creature like it, and as I looked I realized there were lots of them all over our small back patio. Slowly they unfolded, turning back into slugs, and slid away.

...Snails...sometimes over the summer there are slugs everywhere, and sometimes there are snails everywhere. Most of them are quite small, but last fall we found a huge snail (that's a US quarter for scale). We named him Slugsworth, and I guess he curled up somewhere to overwinter because we didn't see him for many months. Then this summer he visited again (I think it must be the same snail, there can't be this many so big in the courtyard between the apartment buildings).

...and some puppy dog tails! The top photo was taken in Milan, as was the one below with the sausage leash. The little white Chihuahua is from Berlin, and the bottom two from Hamburg.

  1. So...this has nothing to do with this post, but I'm going to be in Bielefeld, Germany in early March. I've nicknamed it the 'Pittsburgh of Germany' as it looks to be just about as difficult to get to (ergh). I have no idea what I'm going to do there. What can possibly go wrong?!
