Florence Duomo - the exterior

By Monday, June 17, 2013 , ,

I returned from Florence on Saturday, but am still trying to organize and edit my photos, so I've been a bit slow updating. The first night we had dinner near San Lorenzo Basilica (we were working in part of the complex) and passed by the famous Duomo on our way home:

It's actually quite hard to get a good photo of the Duomo because you can't stand far back enough to get it all into one shot. It's right in the middle of the city with shops and restaurants surrounding it.

Although originally built from 1296 to 1436, the Facade was redone in 1887 in the Neo-Gothic style (although when I think of Gothic and Neo-Gothic I think of the Cologne or Milan Cathedrals, not pink and green marble). I'll do another post on the interior.

The building above in front of the Duomo is a separate building called Battistero di San Giovanni (Baptistery of St. John) and is actually older than the Duomo.
