The Frozen Außenalster , February 2012

By Monday, February 04, 2013 ,

Almost exactly a year ago, the big lake in Hamburg, the Außenalster (the outer Alster. Yes, there is an inner Alster, too!) froze over. Apparently this only happens about once every 10 years, and while it had happened the previous year, it wasn't thick enough for people to walk on it safely.

Last year (February 2012) it was.

This is what the Alster usually looks like:

And this is what it looked like when frozen:

There were lots of people on sleds, and ice skates. Even people riding bicycles across the ice! Some people I work with found their work commute much shorter now that they could cross the lake directly.

I'm not really sure what these guys were all about. I can only guess that since it was midway between Christmas and Easter they decided to combine both holidays when choosing their costumes.

Notice the rabbit with the floppy ears in the front row!

There were the usual stalls with sausages, beer, lebkuchen hearts and gluwein lining the bank. Although the horribly cold temperatures were hardly welcoming for our first few days in Germany, I've found myself recounting the winter the Alster froze over a few times already.

  1. OH WOW! I was there last year in March and it was so sunny and beautiful, I absolutely loved it - so weird to think it was frozen over just weeks before!
