Travel Goals for 2013

By Wednesday, January 23, 2013 ,

Camera update: I sent it off to FujiFilm and today we got a notice saying I have a package to pick up! It would be amazing to get it back in time for Berlin, and I'll starting posting more again when I can start taking decent photos again.

My husband and I have been talking about where we'd like to travel to this year, so I've made a list of some of the places we'd like to go this year and when.

I get about 6 weeks of vacation (a perk of working in academia in Europe) and am only working part time and have a flexible schedule. A lot of these places I plan on going for a long weekend rather than taking a whole week off.

So far this year I already know I will be going to :

  • Berlin this weekend with my husband
  • Kathmandu in March for work
Here's some tentative plans. Some of these are vacations my husband and I would like to take, and some of these are work trips that are in the planning stages:
  • In April or May: Malaga, Southern Spain (my mom inherited a condo here, so whether we go will depend on if it's free or being rented) otherwise, Barcelona, or somewhere else on the Mediterranean
  • June: Florence for work
  • July or August: Copenhagen for work
  • July or August: Edinburgh in the Summer for holiday
  • October: Prague for holiday
  • Plus: Some day and weekend trips to nearby cities like Lüneburg, Lübeck (an UNESCO World Heritage Site) and Bremen
Part of the problem is that Florence, Copenhagen and possibly another trip to Berlin for work have no set dates. We don't even have permission from the libraries and archives we'd be going to, although we're requesting it. So I don't want to pick a weekend randomly for a holiday if I'll either have to cancel it for a work trip or else the trip for work may have to be postponed - and sometimes that means it won't happen till next year or not at all.

On top of that, I'd like to go back to the US (maybe even to defend my thesis!!) at some point, and if it means traveling a lot with very little down time a week or two, I'll do it.

  1. All my vacations are based around work. It's pretty much the cheapest way to go. I've done a "weekend trip" to Switzerland that way...and longer trips to the Greek Islands and Thailand. It's pretty much the only way to go anywhere ;)
